Tiger Woods: Fee influenced schedule

ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates — Tiger Woods acknowledged Tuesday that being paid an appearance fee played a significant role in deciding to open his 2012 season in the Middle East instead of California, where he had traditionally started his golf year.

Woods, who has played in Dubai on six occasions, is making his debut at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship, which begins Thursday at Abu Dhabi Golf Club.

The tournament purse of $2.7 million is less than half of what is being offered this week on the PGA Tour at the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines, but only slightly more than what Woods is believed to be receiving just for showing up here, 12 time zones away.
Asked if the payment of appearance fees influences his scheduling decisions, Woods said, “I’d have to say yes, it certainly does. That’s one of the reasons why a lot of the guys who play in Europe, they do play in Europe, and they do get paid. I think the only tour that doesn’t pay is the U.S. Tour.”

The PGA Tour prohibits the payment of appearance fees. While the subject is not officially discussed among European Tour officials, it is a widely accepted practice. It is perhaps the biggest reason this tournament has attracted the best field of the year to date.
Woods will play the first two rounds in Abu Dhabi with world No. 1 Luke Donald and No. 3 Rory McIlroy. The pairing will start at 7:40 a.m. local time Thursday (10:40 p.m. ET on Wednesday night ET) and at 12:05 p.m. local time Friday (3:05 a.m. ET.)
In addition to Donald, McIlroy and Woods, who is ranked 25th in the world, the tournament has each of the top four players in the Official World Golf Ranking — No. 2 Lee Westwood and defending champion Martin Kaymer (No. 4). In all, six of the top 10 and 11 of the top 25 are in the field.

TaylorMade R11 Driver review

Bought the White driver end of August ’11…have been playing the 09′ Burner which is a great stick as well..But with the R-11 it seems easier to dial in what u r looking for…not only is the adjustable face great..love that u can change the loft..my burner was a 10.5…I actually like the flight of a 9.5..probably picked up 15..to 20 yards…I did have an initial fitting at golfsfmith on the launch monitor. But I like to see the ball fly so i would suggest getting to the range and see it for yourself I did play with my settings a little..do some research on the adjustments u are making..it made it more fun that i was able to change different things and try different set ups..With my Burner I was a typical Slicer from time to time…seems like with a closed face on the R-11 my drives typically now have a nice little fade..I do get the occasional slice but it seems far n fewer between drives..i’m finally confident swinging at 90% on the T Box..it’s a great get.

Love the TaylorMade R11 Driver ,I have a 28 handicap and was worried that this was too much driver for a player at my level. But, I loved the look and bought it in June anyway. Happy to say it has been a great Summer of driving with it! I love it! I have the 9 degree, adjusted to 9.5, with a R flex shaft. I do think the Adjustable Sole Plate is a do-nothing gimmick though!
If you don’t get this club set up properly, it can really hinder your game. I had a long review written about my trials working with Golfsmith to get my R11 squared away, but the bottom line is this. Get it set up correctly and you will love it.

There are some drawbacks. 1. The club really lacks feel. It is hard to explain, but it doesn’t have the same metal snappiness as the R9-however it goes a mile so who cares? 2. The white head can get really scratched up. 3. Setting it up properly can be frustrating at times.
That being said, this is still the best driver in the world.

Former world number one Tiger Woods after two rounds, hand over +10 bar, line 6 from out of the final fourth career hit in the majors out.
At present there is also no one can replace Woods’s status as people need to beat the man. New American PGA Championship Keegan – Bradley is nearly 13 majors appear on the 13th different winner.
“It’s good for golf, because people feel more interesting,” Jimenez said, “but also on the golf great Tiger Woods before, we need him back to his peak, because there is no decline in the number of his audience, TV viewership rate is declining, so this is a difficult time, he is still the biggest names in golf circles, we need him to play well again, which is beneficial to golf. ”
Jimenez is the favorites to win the Czech Open this week, also has a competitive player Peter of Ireland – Lawrie, South Africa player George – Science Ci (George Coetzee), England – Gary Boyd (Gary Boyd) and Denmark’s Soren – Hansen. TaylorMade Rocketballz RBZ 2012 review

It is pathetic! Yes, TM was doing exceptionally well over the last 5-8 years, but what the fk is this?!!!I have been playing something of TM’s (irons, wedges, driver or fwy woods) for more than 15 years, and I have to say I am repulsed that they would go so far as “Rocket Ballz”!! I think one of the R&D guys got fired and was able to release this stupid name and product before being dismissed! If not, The CEO,R&D manager and whomever else that’s responsible for releasing this crap, let alone, investing company profit to release a monstrosity of a “knock-off” Callaway/PowerBilt/Adams/Ping piece-of-crap iron and wood set, should first, be smacked, then have their multi-million dollar contracts burned!! Yeah, I wanna see Sergio,Retief or any of the other contract players playin’ this sht!! I figure it’s about time one of us from MyGolfSpy weighs in here.

First…on the name…yeah, it’s a little cheesy, and perhaps over the top, but NOBODY…NOBODY…in the industry is better at drawing new golfers to their brand like TaylorMade. Not only do new golfers flock to their gear, often times they become loyal and repeat customers. While experienced golfers will likely shake their heads, I’d wager inexperienced golfers will be drawn to the “RocketBallz” name. If nothing else, it is a good way for TaylorMade to compete with Cobra-PUMA for the younger demographic.

For the rest of you who are making fun of the name, I’m with you…BUT here’s my reality. I don’t care if the club is called TaylorMade Rocketballz RBZ , ThunderNutz, or even the PanzyStick, if it outperforms my current driver then it goes in the bag. @Superstick (assuming you come back to read this) – I don’t think anybody here has ever trashed the ProV1, but to say TaylorMade save the industry hyperbole at its worst. They had a comparatively good year, and it was refreshing to see them flip the script and not release a handful of additional drivers (no point, I’m almost certain the R11 blew away all their sales predictions), but it’s ridiculous to think the golf business would be belly up without TaylorMade. Retailers made a bit more, but profit margins in the industry being what they are, a retailer doesn’t isn’t banking much more on a $400 driver than he does a $300.

What I would suggest is that 2011 was an exceptional year for equipment. Though no one can match TM for sales, Callaway, Nike, and others released what I consider, end to end, the best lineups they’ve ever produced.

Michael Jordan out of Presidents Cup

Michael Jordan will be unable to serve as an assistant captain for the U.S. Presidents Cup team in Australia due to the NBA’s continuing labor issues.

Jordan, who is majority owner of the Charlotte Bobcats, will be replaced by Champions Tour player John Cook, an 11-time PGA Tour winner who is also close with team member Tiger Woods.

“After careful consideration, it is with regret that I have decided to cancel my trip to Australia later this month for The Presidents Cup,” Jordan said in a statement released by the PGA Tour. “With the NBA labor situation unsettled, as the majority owner of the Charlotte Bobcats, I feel it is necessary that I remain in the country. It was an honor to have been chosen by Fred Couples to serve as a captain’s assistant. I wish Fred and the United States team the best of luck.”

“While the team will miss his friendship, spirit and leadership, we certainly understand the complexity of his current team obligations,” Couples said.

The NBA is in the midst of a lockout that has cost the league the first month of a season that was scheduled to begin on Tuesday.

Jordan has served in the role of honorary captain for Couples at the Presidents Cup played in San Francisco in 2009 and won by the United States over an international team led by Australia’s Greg Norman. The competition is similar to the Ryder Cup, with a squad of international players from outside of Europe taking on the Americans.

The only time the U.S. has lost the competition that began in 1994 was the last time it was played at Royal Melbourne in 1998.

When Couples was re-named to the post for this year, he again asked Jay Haas and Jordan to join him as assistants. Couples then chose Cook to replace the NBA Hall of Famer.

Cook, who is playing in this week’s Charles Schwab Cup on the Champions Tour, will join Couples, Woods, Norman and several others participating in the Presidents Cup at next week’s Australian Open in Sydney. The Presidents Cup is Nov. 17-20.

Great Ping G20 Driver review

Bought this a few weeks ago to upgrade from my G15. Had a Rapture and G10 prior so yes I am a Ping fan. Have always had stiff shafts but changed (getting older) to a regular Tour shaft for my new Ping G20 Driver   . I hated the club at first as the feel was VERY different to my G15. A few weeks later and a few practise shots forward I will not have any other Driver in my bag right now!!!. It hits the ball so STRAIGHT – and without any effort!! My Golflogix phone software shows my average drive with this new machine at just over 5 yards LONGER than my G15 – 298yds average.
What a club! Give it time and it will give you straight and long shots guaranteed!
I bought this driver for my son and he loves it. He was hitting is old driver high and only about 280 yards, He has been hitting the G20 over three hundred yards with his longest 345 yards. His ball flight is a lot lower and he is able to work his shots. Thanks goldsmith for helping him to get the right equipment all threw his junior years.
Additional Features:

Grip: ID8
Shaft Type: Ping TFC 169D

The TaylorMade R11 TP Driver is a Great driver!

I went through many drivers over the last few weeks and hit all the “top” drivers you consistently hear about. I was very close to going with the Ping i15, which is a great driver in my opinion; however, after hitting the R11 with the Aldila RIP (alpha) I was sold. This driver is phenomenal and is very, very easy to control. The ability to close or open the face is a fantastic feature and allows you to adjust as necessary as your swing evolves. The driver is as long as anything on the market and is the easiest to control. If you have the money, the TaylorMade R11 TP Driver edition is worth the extra $100.

i purchased an r9 supertri tp few months ago and after it broke, i sent it to taylormade receiving an r11 tp back, its a littler lower coming off the face than the r9 supertri but is piercing and hot, if you hit it on the sweet spot you cant feel vibration and it travels about 8 yards further than the r9 supertri tp, the looks are good too, i dont find it to be worth 500 ive tried callaway octane, adams f11 and they seem to be close to performance but not quite there yet. dont like the titleist line of drivers but will be faithful to taylormade for a long time, if you cant afford a tp dont worry its just that much better, Try it out for yourself

Tiger Woods finishes third

SYDNEY — A final-day rally came up short for Tiger Woods on Sunday at the Australian Open, where he was bidding to win for the first time in two years.

Woods got within one shot after a birdie at the par-5 14th hole but was ultimately doomed by crushing bogeys at the par-5 11th and the short par-4 13th — a hole that eventual champion Greg Chalmers birdied.
“It could have been a real low round today,” Woods said after shooting 5-under-par 67 to finish third, two strokes back. “I’ve just got to keep plugging along. I’m showing some progress. … Two holes on the back nine today, and I putted awful yesterday, or I would have been right there.”

It was Woods’ best finish of an aborted year that has seen him play 11 times due to injuries. Since returning in August, the Australian Open was his fourth tournament.

As a small consolation, Woods was the low American in a field that featured eight players from the 12-man U.S. Presidents Cup team that will play at Royal Melbourne beginning on Thursday.

Chalmers, 37, won his national Open for the second time to go along with his 1998 title. He has two Nationwide Tour victories but none on the PGA Tour or the European Tour. Another former Australian Open champion, John Senden, finished second.
Woods began the final round six strokes back of Senden after a disappointing 75 on Saturday that he will likely look back on as the biggest reason for not winning the tournament.

During the third round, Woods took 34 putts and was frustrated by his inability to keep the round closer to par. Had he done so, he might have been celebrating his first victory since Nov. 15, 2009 — when he defeated Chalmers by two strokes at the Australian Masters in Melbourne.

Unlike Saturday, when Woods bogeyed the first three holes, he got off to a solid start, with birdies at the third and fourth. He added another at the ninth to make the turn in 3 under par.

But for the second straight day, Woods was unable to capitalize on the 11th, a 580-yard par 5 with water running down the right side. Titleist 910 D3 Driver Like Saturday, Woods badly missed his drive to the left, and was in a sandy waste area that made for an awkward shot. He had to his a wood for his third shot to the green, pulled it to the left, and was unable to get up and down for par.

TaylorMade R11 Irons is the most powerful, playable, and refined iron ever.

Inspired by R11 driver innovation, the new TaylorMade R11 Iron is tuned to perfection. Precision center-of-gravity (CG) placements, ultra-thin faces, a Tour sole design, and Inverted Cone Technology make R11 the most powerful, playable, and refined iron ever.

With a weight port permanently positioned in the center of the back of an iron head during assembly, the Precision Weighting Port assures that each TaylorMade R11 Irons in the set is of uniform swingweight while also ensuring that the CG location is precisely and optimally positioned in the center of the face between the toe and heel. In the past, clubmakers have installed cartridges of varying weight in the hosel to adjust swingweight, and by doing so have pulled the CG closer to the heel to varying degrees, resulting in a set of irons consistent in swingweight but inconsistent in CG location.

The Inverted Cone Technology inside the R11 Irons promotes faster ball speed and distance on off-center hits, and the ultra-thin face thickness also promotes faster ball speed and distance in the R11 long- and middle-irons. The R11 irons Multi-Functional Sole is beveled at the back to make it perform like a much thinner sole, which increases playability from a variety of lies. Yet it also features a low and deeper center of gravity that makes it easy to launch the ball on a powerful and penetrating flight.

Additional features:

Ultra-thin face thickness promotes faster ball speed and distance
Inverted Cone Technology promotes faster ball speed and distance on off-center hits
Multi-functional sole increases playability from a variety of lies
Progressive topline thickness promotes confidence at address throughout the set
